Introduction

Styles and Tags provide a means to define various text formats, placement, and other options on a subtitle or line within the subtitle.  Styles apply to an entire subtitle whereas Tags (also referred to as  Line tags) are applied to individual lines.  Styles, therefore, are assigned to the subtitle and Tags are applied to lines.  The assignment of Styles and Tags are made using the Change Styles and Line Tags window.

The formatting parameters on a Tag are a subset of the values assigned on a Style.  The formatting parameters on a Tag have check marks that, when check, will override the corresponding values assign to the Style.

An unlimited number of Styles can be defined using the Styles Definition Window and an unlimited number of Tags can be defined using the Tag Definition Window.

By default, a Subtitles are assigned to the Style defined as 'Factory' and Tags are not assigned (NA) when the subtitles are loaded into TitleFactory.  All subtitles must have a Style if images are going to be created but do not have to have Line Tags.

Some information from the Style and Tag Definition  information can optionally be used to display the subtitle text on the Main Window using the Toggle Display menu item found when right clicking Subtitle Sub Window.  This can help to identify a subtitles Style and Tags without having to look at the definitions themselves.  Not all information is used in the display.

Style Definitions

The following images provide a view of the formatting and text placement options that are available for a Style.  For more explanation please refer to Styles Definition window.

Line Tag (Style Overrides)

The following image shows the Tag Definition window and what overrides can be applied.

The fields are the same as those that are on the Styles Definition window but are a subset of those.  Subtitles may have both Styles and Tags assigned and in those cases the items that are checked on the Tag definition will override those that are defined on the Style Definition.

Change Style and Line Tags

Styles and Tags are assigned using the Change styles and Line Tags window.

Change Style and Line Tags is accessed via right-clicking on the Subtitle Sub Window and pressing Change Styles and Tags.  In order to change Styles and tags, subtitle entries or individual lines must first be selected on the main window.  Several lines can be selected at once by clicking and dragging on the Main Window or by using shift-click-select (to select adjacent entries) or control-click-select to select non-adjacent entries.  It is important to note that only those individual lines that have been selected will be changed by the Change Styles and Line tags process.

When the Change Style and Line Tags window is first displayed, the Image Style, and Line Tag fields are blank.  Sample text (taken from the first Subtitle that was selected) is displayed.  The number of Line Tags displayed correspond to the Line per Image parameter as defined on the Project Settings window.

The selected entries will have their style changed to the Style and Tag Definition that is selected.  If no value is selected then the Style or Line Tag is not assigned.

The following occurs when the Update button is pressed

The Remove All Tags button simply resets the Line tags to 'NA'  while the Revert button resets the Image Style and Line Tags to blank.  The Line Tag Remove buttons, when pressed are pressed then corresponding Line Tag will be assigned to NA.

Assigned Styles and Tags are displayed on the Main Window.  To view the information, the Subtitle Sub Window can be expanded or the other sub windows can be temporary minimized.  See the image below.

Formatting Control Characters

Some timecode files such as the Spruce Timecode file format (STL), the SubRip (SRT) and Scenarist Closed Caption files may contain formatting control characters that will be imported into TitleFactory.  These formatting control characters take the form of either ^I before lines that are to be italicized or HTML like tags such as <i>text</x> which also indicate italicized text.

The only formatting control characters recognized are those for italicizing text at the present time.

TitleFactory will import these control characters and will display them with the text on the main window when the text is loaded.  The control characters can then be:

Removing Formatting Control Characters

If the control characters are not needed they should be removed by right-clicking on the Main Window and selecting the Remove Formatting Chars from Subtitle Text.  If the control characters are not removed they will be placed on any images that are produced and will appear on output timecoded files that contain subtitle text.

Using Formatting Control Characters When Creating Images

If the desire is to create italicized lines of text using the control characters then the Obey ^I Style Formatting and Obey <i></i> Style Formatting should be checked.  These are including on the Project Settings Image Tab.

When these items are checked and the subtitle line contains the formatting style codes then any tags that are associated with the lines will be ignored.

In order for the italicized control characters to be created there must be an Italic style associated with the font that is specified in the Style that is associated with the Subtitle.  In case of failure, an error message is produced at the end of the Create Images Process.  A text audit can also be run to determine missing errors prior to image creation.  The text audit item is called Control Character/Font Inconsistency.

Associating Tags to Subtitle Lines Containing Formatting Control Characters

The Formatting control characters can also be used to associate Tags to individual lines of subtitle text.  This can be used in order to not only italicize the text but to make other formatting changes such as changing its font, style (e.g.,bold) or size.

Accomplishing this is a multi step process.  The tag must first be defined using the Tag Definitions Window.  The individual lines of subtitle text must be selected, their Tags changed,  and the formatting characters removed.

The individual lines of subtitle text can be selected manually using the control-click method, however, the Search/Replace function can be used to speed up the process.  By entering the control characters such as <i> or ^I into the Search/Replace Window and pressing the Find ALL button,

the individual lines on the Main Window are selected and shown in RED.

Once the lines are selected the Change Styles and Tags process can be used to associate the new tag names.  The following image shows the Change Styles and Line Tags window.  As shown, this will associate all selected lines to use the Tag named 'italic'.

The result is as shown below, with the second line of Subtitles 2 and 3 now associated with the Tag named 'italic'.

Using the Remove Formatting Chars from Subtitle Text, as previously described, will then need to be executed in order to remove the characters from the generated images.
